Prior to United States acquisition of Florida an issue of paper money was printed for use in Pensacola. Two existing notes bear the partial date 177_. Little is known of this early currency. Later, in 1817 an issue of scrip was tendered in Fernandina by Gregor MacGregor, who liberated north Florida from Spanish rule. The notes were used in connection with the Customs House established upon Amelia Island. For a short while Amelia Island operated as an independent and sovereign entity. For some reason the Territory of Florida issued a very minute quantity of interest bearing Treasury Notes between 1829 and 1831. Florida had little choice but to issue paper money to finance its Civil War involvement. These notes spanned 1861 to 1865. Two additional issues were prepared after the Civil War. The bankrupted state government may have turned to paper money as a desparate measure. One issue was prepared between 1866 and 1869. None of the existing notes have been signed or dated. The other issue was tendered in 1870. -- The Illustrated History of Florida Paper Money (1980), by Daniel G. Cassidy. (Visit AbeBooks.comfor the availability of this out-of-print book.)
