GSA Silver Dollars
United States of America
From 1972-1974, the General Services Administration (GSA) held five separate mail-bid auctions for Morgan silver dollars; uncirculated Carson City (CC mint mark) GSA dollars make up the majority of the coins auctioned.
. . . Though many Morgan dollars are indeed common, the 1895 is distinctly rare. Mint records indicate that 12,000 business strikes and 880 proofs of the 1895 dollar were produced, but the coin is known today only in proof. There is no record of any business strike ever coming to light. One theory has it that business strikes were made, held in storage, then melted during World War I to provide silver bullion for the British under the terms of the Pittman Act . . . -- Ed Reiter, COINage (July 2007)
